BEST DISTANCE FROM MOUTH TO RECORDING MIC

What’s the best distance from mouth to microphone? I get asked this quite often in my coaching sessions and workshops.

Too near and the sound will clip, distort, and just unpleasant to listen to.

Too far and you’ll have to adjust the gain or give more by way of projection and energy.

It also really depends on the type of microphone (dynamic or condenser), microphone settings and also the script.

For a more intimate read, go closer, but adjust your own speaking volume. If you need to go full on energy in delivery, sometimes you need to even take a step back.
